History & Significance

Almost all birthstones have some symbolism attached – sapphires are said to symbolize wisdom, loyalty, and nobility. Historically, they were believed to protect the wearer from envy and harm. Sapphires have held long significance in the Christian church; clerics of the Middle Ages wore sapphires to symbolize Heaven. Ancient Persians believed that the earth sat upon a sapphire, which made the sky blue.

Famous sapphires include

  • The Rockefeller Sapphire, a 62.02-carat rectangular step cut from Myanmar, acquired by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. in 1934 and later recut and remounted as a brooch and ring.
  • Princess Dianna’s engagement ring; a 12-carat blue sapphire gem surrounded by diamonds that was later passed to Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge.
  • “La Coeur de la Mar” or “The Heart of the Ocean” from the Titanic. (Actually, the fictionalized movie-version necklace was a blue diamond, but there was actually a ginormous blue sapphire necklace that went down with the Titanic and was later recovered).

Care & Cleaning

Sapphires are a relatively hard gemstone. It is tough and does not have a tendency to break when struck which makes it a great choice for daily wear. Warm, soapy water is a safe option for cleaning your sapphire jewelry but ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually safe as well. Feel free to bring in your September birthstone piece for us to clean free of charge anytime!
