November’s birthstones, topaz and citrine, are light, warm yellow-orange gemstones – the perfect uplifting stones for this chilly month. While topaz comes in many colors, the stone is most often associated with its rich orange hues, complimenting the yellow and orange of citrine. While their colors are often mistaken for one another, these stones are quite distinct in their composition and properties.
Topaz is one of those “rainbow” gems – it’s color can range from cool blues to pinks to clear. However, it’s historically known for the honey yellow and fiery orange, giving it an undeniable autumnal charm. The most common color today is blue, so if you don’t love warm tones you can cheat and use blue topaz as your November birthstone! Topaz is a silicate mineral composed of aluminum and fluorine. It has an impressive hardness (8 on the Mohs scale), making it durable enough for frequent wear. Topaz is said to bring clarity of thought, strength, and warmth to those who wear it.
Derived from the French word citron (meaning lemon), citrine is known for its range of transparent yellow to brownish-orange hues. Citrine belongs to the quartz family, giving it a slightly softer durability than topaz (7 on the Mohs scale); okay for frequent wear but needs extra care if you’d like to wear it every day. Its bright tones are said to evoke prosperity and positivity, earning it the nickname “Merchant’s Stone” for its supposed ability to attract wealth. What better gift than citrine jewelry?
